What do you think about Mary the Mother of Jesus?

In the Middle Ages Mary was always shown as golden- haired, clothed in white and blue with white skin;   she would quite literally be placed on a pedestal in so many shrines and churches .  The idea was believers needed her to pray for them  to her son Jesus  , because they didn’t feel good enough.

Today some Christians go to the opposite extreme – even mention Mary’s name and they’ll be cringing away as if she’s some sort of pantomime baddie.  I know of at least one church where there was a Lady Chapel established ccenturies  ago.   Now that chapel is simply the Side Chapel and anyone using its previous name is instantly and firmly corrected.

Poor Mary!

Of course we forget Mary was herself a prophetess – read the Magnificat in Luke’s Gospel and you’ll see what I mean.  She was an incredibly brave young woman, who loved her God and was prepared to be obedient to his commands.  I wonder if we  match up to her standards when  God tells us what he wants us to do?  She doesn’t question, she accepts God at his word in faith. 

So today consider Mary and what she can tell us about obedience, faith and trust.  She is not to be placed on a pedestal, a figure of untouchable and remote  perfection.  On the other hand she is not a figure to fear in some sort of superstitious dread.  She is someone to add to our list of people, famous and unknown, who show us what a life dedicated to our Father can mean for the good of all people.  Surely she is someone we should respect.

Prayer
Almighty Father.  Thank for you for all the people  through all the ages who have been obedient to your will and who have made a difference.  May we be ready to listen to your voice and serve you in the way you choose for us.  May our lives be lives of service to you and to your Kingdom.
