“Cycling”

Thought for the day – Monday 25th May 2020

Things I like to do….

This is the second in a series of “Thoughts for the day” using four of my hobbies, all of which I have been fortunate enough to continue despite the Covid-19 lockdown. They all give me the opportunity to reflect and ponder on my faith.

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

I took up cycling more seriously around 3 years ago. It would then have taken me all my effort to cycle the 2 miles into town. However now I regularly enjoy(?) a 40 mile round trip and was planning to do the Suffolk Sunrise (100miles) in May this year.

This would have been impossible to achieve without a great deal of training and perseverance.
The first thing I needed to do was throw off some weight, (literally). To train for the race God has set us, we need to train and strip off the excess weight that slows us down. I found a cycling buddy who could encourage and challenge me.

In our faith, it’s good to find friends who are also committed to the race and who will help us keep our eyes fixed on the road and the goal of Jesus.

Prayer
Gracious God, help us to shed the excess weight we carry around in our lives, thank you that those who have gone before us have laid out the track we are to follow, and help us to train effectively and efficiently so that we can achieve the goal you set us
AMEN
