It was my granddaughter’s first birthday last week, and as you would expect we all gathered to celebrate the joy that she has brought into our lives over the last 12 months. Looking at the date I was reminded that my grandmother, (her great -great -grandmother) was born 143 years before almost to the day.
Ottie of course will never have met her great-great-grandmother, but I have the privilege of having been in the company of both, “ancient & modern.”
My grandmother came to live with us after my grandfather died. I think I was about 5 years old at the time. She was our carer when my parents were at work, she taught me how to knit, a skill I am now putting to good use in my role as granny!
My grandmother was born into a Methodist family, her brother was a Methodist minister, and there were several Local Preachers amongst the extended family. I remember the one time she got really cross, (she used to get “slightly” cross with my sister and I), was when my sister tore a page in her treasured bible.
I wonder what memories my granddaughter will have of her granny, what legacy do we leave?
Prayer: Thank you, God, for those men and women of faith who have influenced our lives, many, years before we were born. Help us to be a people of faith who will leave a legacy of belief in the living and risen Lord, who came to save us and who loves each one of us unconditionally. Amen
