Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my path

PSALM 119 verse 105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my path.

I was reminded of this verse after I had read a daily Prayer Guide from Open Doors.

A man in Yemen is preparing for capture by the authorities by memorising scripture. He said, “I want to be a walking Bible, so that wherever I am taken, I can share about Jesus.”  I was amazed at this man’s willingness to prepare for something that he possibly considers as not if, but when.

There are times when someone will quote a verse, such as the one above, and I can recall the wording. At other times, scriptures are brought to my attention, and they are very helpful at the time, and I have to search to find and consider the context.

On social media, there are occasional posts asking if anyone has a Bible and reads from it, rather than an app. There are encouraging reports of young people who are buying and reading the Bible. One contributor who posts every day a scripture-based comment confessed to being an atheist for many years until he started to read the Bible.

Readers may have heard an expression such as, “The only Bible people will read is you.”

I recall a chorus we used to sing many years ago, ‘Read your Bible, pray every day’. I am very grateful for daily notes and phone apps that encourage me to read various passages of the Bible and then give added comments to help.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the ready access we have to Bibles, and I pray that we may appreciate what a blessing that is and ask that You enable us to use it in a way that enables us to draw closer to You, and its teachings, and so have a positive effect on our lives. AMEN
