How often do you hear or say the Lord’s Prayer? How often do we really reflect on its meaning?
The Lord’s Prayer was given by Jesus to his disciples as an illustration of how they and we should pray. It includes all the elements of prayer- praise, confession, prays for the world and for our daily needs, and for help in our daily struggles.
There have been many bible study courses and commentaries on the Lord’s Prayer as it is packed full of God’s words for us.
Just looking at one phrase, I wonder what it means to you?
“Your will be done.”
Cynics might argue this means that we have no free will and that ultimately we simply resign ourselves to fate as God will have his way whatever we do.
However, I believe this phrase is a request that God’s purposes can be worked out in this world as well as in the next, and that we can be active participants in bringing about the accomplishment of God’s purposes here on earth.
This phrase is about us offering ourselves in helping to bring about God’s will for the world, but more important is that we ask for his help and guidance, and to be equipped to “do his will.”
Prayer: (Matthew 6:9-13) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. AMEN
