It has been said that, “the trouble is that common sense is not very common”,
I am often fascinated as I read what I consider to be familiar Bible passages and, as a friend of mine once said, “A verse jumps out of the page”. This was my experience as my daily reading focused on Psalm 51. This is the Psalm that was said to have been written by king David subsequent to a visit by the prophet Nathan after the king had committed adultery and was complicit in a murder.
Verses 5 and 6 state, “Surely, I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place”. I read these verses shortly after hearing of a USA state court ruling that “frozen embryos were considered human beings”.
I am not qualified to comment on that legal ruling, but I was amazed that David should claim, “even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place”. I wonder if this psalm encouraged James to write (chapter 1 verse 5) “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
How amazing it is, that our creator God is able to supply the wisdom we need, from conception. This offer of wisdom is surely a choice we cannot afford to miss.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we never cease to be amazed as we become aware of more of your creational power and influence in our lives. Please help us to make the right responses to what you offer us. AMEN
