My granddaughter recently discovered Stickle bricks at Humpty Dumpty club, and, as it’s not a toy she has at home, we were sitting at a table exploring what we could make and sorting the pieces into sizes and colours. As we played, the little one was keeping an eye on what was going on around her. She watched Jenny, who runs the group, go into the walk in store cupboard. She looked at me and said,” Grandma’s in the cupboard!” With some indignation, I assured her that I was here beside her – Jenny was in the cupboard. It seems that anyone of a certain age with white hair fits the ‘Grandma’ criteria!!! I was rather put out! After all, I had picked her up and brought her to the group, I would be dealing with any ‘accidents’ and tantrums, I would be negotiating with Mummy when she goes home with paint on her cardigan or falls asleep when Mummy really wants her awake so she will sleep that night. If all you need to be a Grandma is to have white hair – that’s a pretty poor criteria for the investment in an ongoing relationship!
But hold on a minute! Am I not just the same towards God – my Maker, Protector, Provider, Saviour! How fickle am I. It’s so easy to find other gods to prioritise – family, career, possessions, holidays, even church activities – none of which are wrong but they have to take second place. What’s my criteria for something to be a god over me? I have had some low standards in my time.
Jesus said the greatest commandment is, (Matthew 22:37)”Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” Who or what is God of your life?
