The knowledge of the holy : the attributes of God : their meaning in the Christian life by AW Tozer
STL Productions, 1976 (first published in 1961) 128 pages £9 (various editions are available)
AW Tozer can aptly be described as ‘a thinking man’s preacher’. He enjoyed a fruitful ministry in Chicago and Canada in the 19th century despite never having had seminary or theological college training. Indeed, he didn’t even finish high school.
For someone self-taught, who had such a keen grasp of Biblical and theological truth, that is truly amazing.
The many references to historic and contemporary wrings, not least the poetry of hymns, show Tozer’s wide reading and understanding of the deep things of God.
In this treatment of the 21 attributes of the Almighty Judeo-Christian God, there is no waffle just a straightforward, clearly presented exposition of how our understanding of who God is while insisting that no exploration of the attributes can ever be complete or exhaustive.
There is compelling logic here as well as spiritual depth and an attractive and engaging style in Tozer’s writing.
Apart from any other considerations, reading ‘The knowledge of the holy’ is a healthy antidote to the current unbalanced obsession with just one of God’s attributes.
