Animal Engineers

I was trying to think about what to write for today when I read an article about how beavers had built a 70-metre-long dam in Yorkshire. The natural barrier built by a family of beavers in Pickering is the largest dam in England and has saved the town’s population from being flooded.

Since they were introduced to the River Seven three years ago they have transformed the area and have taken the peak out of the water flow from the moors. The area now attracts much more wildlife and they even moved a clump of iris flowers and replanted them.

Apparently, the Environment Agency said it couldn’t afford to pay for a multimillion-pound flood defence scheme. The beavers have done it using nature. They are God’s animal engineers.

Genesis 1 v 25 says, “God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.”

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all the creatures you have created. Help us to appreciate how we can live in harmony together and to learn from them.
