I talk back to the devil : straightforward appeals for Christ-like living by AW Tozer
Authentic, 2009 134 pages £9 ISBN 978 1 850 781 486
Converted at the age of 17, Aiden Tozer had no formal training in a Bible college or seminary but was entirely self taught. Indeed, he didn’t even have a high school education.
He quickly became a notable preacher in the USA and was, for many years, the pastor of an evangelical church in Chicago.
If his preaching was noted for anything it was to impress on his congregation the need for Christ-like living; spirituality was the essential hallmark of this preacher.
This book is a prime example of his urgent call to live with a deep and satisfying love for God rather than be satisfied with a run-of-the-mill kind of Christianity, just coasting along.
Looking to God and to Jesus rather than looking at oneself and one’s victories and failures was the desperate need of the time. Perhaps it still is.
There is a case to be made for the spirit to be the lynchpin of a Christian’s behaviour.
Does the spirit govern moral behaviour or is morality a function of the mind, as some say ?
Tozer’s impassioned writing will always be a timely challenge.
Worth reading on that score alone.
