Seeds to weeds?

We have just been through a period of celebrating harvest. Despite the driest summer I can remember, and our lawn certainly seems to reflect that, we have had a harvest of figs, peaches, grapes, chilies, beans, potatoes and onions…oh and of course courgettes a plenty!

One of the things I’ve noticed in the parched flower beds bordering our garden are the seed heads on the delphiniums, and other perennials.

My husband likes growing unusual plants – he bought foxglove seeds, mullein seeds, scabiosa seeds and bergamot seeds amongst others.  I didn’t have the heart to tell him we already have foxgloves that do their own spreading of seeds!

It never ceases to amaze me that these tiny brown flecks can lay dormant on the soil, some are eaten by birds as nutritious sources of energy, others fail to germinate, however many will germinate and produce an array of colour of their own.

In our Christian faith or lives are the soil in which seeds are sown, we can nurture those seeds and allow God to continue his work in us so that we blossom and flourish. Some of us may be prize winning blooms, but the majority will be the common or garden flowers, some scented others not, some delicate others much plainer. Some may need much care and attention and others quietly get on with the job.

All are God’s Creation, flowers and weeds.

Prayer: Creator God, thank you that you have sown the seeds of faith in our lives. Help us to blossom and flower, bringing glory to you
