What excuses do we make?

Are you a prevaricator or a procrastinator? Do you put things off until tomorrow?

We can make all sorts of excuses, or we try to tell ourselves, all sorts of reasons not to do something.

Just take a look at some of the Old Testament characters who God used as his mouthpiece.

Moses was a murderer who had a stutter. David was also a murderer who stole another man’s wife. Jeremiah thought he was too young. Hosea had other marital problems, a wife who was serially unfaithful. Amos was a simple shepherd farmer.

In the New Testament we also have some very dubious characters – Peter denies Jesus at a most critical point, and Paul makes a prosperous living out of persecuting and ordering the killing of followers of Jesus.

God has either a great sense of humour or sees beyond the failings and weaknesses of those he calls.

When Jeremiah tries to use the excuse of his youth and inexperience, God replies,

“You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you and will rescue you…..now I have put my words in your mouth.”

God sees eloquence in the stuttering, wisdom in the young, faithfulness in the chaotic.

Stop prevaricating or procrastinating.

Our excuses are not reasons.

God can use each one of us “warts and all.”

Prayer:(abridged Covenant Prayer)

Patient and Faithful Lord, I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, put me with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to enduring. Let me be employed for you or set aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and willingly offer all things to your pleasure and disposal. You are mine, and I am yours. AMEN
